TRONDHEIM, Norway, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Rosenborg Trondheim snatched a late penalty to force a 1-1 draw with Juventus in a Champions League Group E game that was dominated by the Italians.
'It felt bitter not to win,' Juventus coach Marcello Lippi said after a second-half onslaught in which the Serie A leaders hit the Norwegian champions' woodwork three times.
The draw put Juventus top of the group standings with four points from two matches, one clear of Porto and Celtic, with Rosenborg bottom on a single point after two games.
Juventus, who controlled a match played on a slippery pitch, only managed to break through in the 85th minute when Alessandro del Piero knocked the ball into the net from 16 metres after a pass from David Trezeguet.
Three minutes later, Bent Skammelsrud delighted a crowd of more than 20,000 by levelling the score from the penalty spot after striker Harald Brattbakk was tripped by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
But Skammelsrud's celebrations were short-lived after he collided with an Italian elbow in extra time and was carried off on a stretcher suffering from suspected concussion.
Del Piero, Uruguayan Fabian O'Neill and Gianluca Zambrotta all hit the woodwork in the second half before the Italian Serie A leaders finally broke the deadlock.
Del Piero had also forced a good save from Rosenborg's Icelandic goalkeeper Arni Arason from a long-range free-kick that looped over the defensive wall. Brattbakk came close to scoring in the first half with a fierce shot just over the bar.
Juventus were also unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the first half after O'Neill broke free inside the area and fell under a challenge from Skammelsrud.
Rosenborg's veteran coach Nils Arne Eggen admitted the Norwegians were lucky to escape with a draw, the result keeping alive their hopes of reaching the next stage of the Champions League.
'When you look at the result I'm very happy and understand that Juventus are not,' he said. 'They hit the woodwork three times and we were really overwhelmed.'
Eggen, who described watching the game as an 'adrenaline shock', criticised Juventus for what he said was the foul that felled Skammelsrud.
'It was really nasty...and should have been punished as it was totally deliberate,' Eggen said.
Also in injury-time, a scuffle broke out between Alessio Tacchinardi and Brattbakk that went unseen by the Dutch referee Jan Wegereef.
Celtic beat Porto 1-0 in the other Group E match on Tuesday.
