BRUSSELS, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Anderlecht erased the memories of their 4-0 humiliation by Dynamo Kiev three weeks ago, crushing the Ukrainians 4-2 in their Champions League Group G clash on Wednesday with a stunning first half display.
A goal down inside a minute after some sloppy defending
gifted Kiev an easy goal from a corner which Kakha Kaladze
converted, the Belgians stormed back with four goals in the
first half in a performance that surprised even their most
optimistic fans.
The result the performance were a cause of major
satisfaction for Anderlecht coach Aime Anthuenis, who has come
in for much criticism in recent weeks.
'I think the first 45 minutes was perhaps the best
performance we've seen from Anderlecht not just this season, but
for the past few years,' Anthuenis said.
'I've always said it's important that we get Champions
League points, but it's just as important how we get them. I
think we've done well on both counts.'
After going behind, the Belgians stormed straight back,
peppering the Kiev goal with chance after chance.
Even before Vladyslav Vaschuk deflected the ball past his
own keeper after 10 minutes, Anderlecht had looked dangerous and
could easily have doubled their final tally.
Tomasz Radzinski was a constant threat with his blistering
pace and the much-maligned Alin Stoica finally found the
confidence in central midfield to set up a number of dangerous
attacks.
Justice was served when Radzinski headed in a low cross from
Bertrand Crasson after 37 minutes and followed that four minutes
later with a second goal from close in after an Anderlecht free
kick had been charged down.
Stoica scored the fourth on the stroke of halftime after a
superb solo run down the left wing from Bart Goor and a deft
inside pass from giant Czech striker Jan Koller, whose strength
gave the Ukrainians futher trouble.
Kiev, who travelled to Brussels confident of victory, had
careless defending to blame for the margin of their defeat, but
also met Anderlecht at the height of their powers, spurred on by
an unusually noisy home crowd.
After the fireworks of the first period, the second half was
the inevitable anti-climax.
Anderlecht were happy to play the ball around and preserve
their advantage, while Kiev lacked the heart to mount a serious
counter-attack.
Radzinski came close on a couple of occasions to what have
been a well-deserved hattrick, but as Anderlecht's defence
slumbered Andrii Husin blasted a long-range effort just over the
bar before Valentin Bialkevich scored a consolation goal two
minutes from time.
With an unexpected six points from their four games,
Anderlecht are starting to believe they could get to the next
stage of the competition. Next Tuesday is the crunch game in
Brussels against Manchester United.
Asked what his team's chances were against the group
favourites who humbled them 5-1 in Manchester, Anthuenis was
realsitic.
'I'd say it's 20 percent for us and 80 percent for them.'
As to Anderlecht's hopes of qualifying: 'Normally in this
group we are number four, but you never know what the result
will be and you never know your form on the day. If we have a
good game like today, maybe we can go further,' Anthuenis said.
